Unepic is a Castlevania-style 2D platformer that has been in development for over two years, and a lengthy demo was recently released by Francisco to coincide with the launch of the game’s official site. The story is about a young man named Daniel who is on a quick toilet break during a particularly intense D&D session, but somehow finds himself stranded in a fantasy world after the room went dark for a couple of seconds.
Like any other respectable role-playing game, Daniel will have access to a plethora of character stats that can be improved by earning experience points, a surprisingly robust inventory system with assignable shortcut keys, and an automap feature that will come in handy when charting out the entire construction of the dungeon. Weapons, potions and spells can be collected, concocted or bought, and there’s even a central save room that you can use to record your progress.
Now bear in mind that the build put up for download by Francisco is just a demo, and the quest will end as soon as you’ve defeated the first dungeon boss in the mine area. That is still about an hour’s worth of play time to be had, and being as fun as it is you’d be silly not to give the game a try.
