Michael Brough, developer of the wonderfully complex strategy title Vertex Dispenser, has wandered onto the iPad to create the digital board game/action-strategy title Glitch Tank. In a tabletop style as seen above, single players can face a very challenging AI or two human players can face off, aiming to destroy the opponent’s main tank.
The twist is that players can’t move freely; 4 play cards dictate all movement, granting such abilities as moving forward, laying bombs, turning, spawning tinier tanks and firing a laser. While spawning tanks might seem like a good idea, it becomes quite messy when they all fire their laser simultaneously, especially with friendly fire being rather unfriendly.
I’d suggest learning the game via the turn-based mode, since it makes the game more like chess. Real-time mode removes the turn-taking barrier and becomes hectic and ultimately fun upon mastering the mechanics.

Developer Michael Brough said the idea for Glitch Tank was part of a theme of two-player versus games with limited controls that he’s been exploring. The ideas stem back to a TIGSource versus competition earlier this year, with Exuberant Struggle. “Since then, I’ve prototyped dozens of different games with the same general restrictions (super-low resolution and limited palette, arrow-key-only controls, two players only).” Glitch Tank is just one of many games he’s working on, which he said turned out to feel much more natural on the iPad than on PC.
Brough said that with arrow keys there’s an extra layer of indirection that makes it too hard to control. “Multiplayer games are really what the iPad is for; Shot Shot Shoot is a big inspiration to me, I spent a lot of time playing it in a pub one time. RoboRally is clearly an inspiration for Glitch Tank, too. So yeah, expect more unusual two-player games in a bit.”
