Before Your Eyes follows you on a journey to the afterlife, your memories unfolding and fading within a blink of your actual eyes.
The game draws upon the idea of your life flashing by in the blink of an eye upon death, having you share and guide the retelling of your life’s story through blinking. Your webcam keeps track of your eyes, and when you blink, you interact with the life story that you’re sharing with a ferryman to the world of the dead. He’s apparently very interested in your story, and wants you to blink your way through your most important memories as you make your way together.
Blinking can be voluntary and involuntary, though, and shifting your way through your memories can be heartwarming and hurtful in equal measure. You may find yourself blinking away a moment you never want to let go of, unable to stop yourself or hold on any more. You might rush through hurtful memories you’d rather forget, closing your eyes on that portion of your life. All of it whips by as you shift time forward each time you blink, your life feeling like it’s always rushing past you, for good or bad.
Before Your Eyes is a compelling look at our memories and the fickleness of time. It captures how everything we cherish is fleeting, and even as we feel certain days will never end, nor would we want them to, that one day they’ll just be a tiny moment in our memories. That we should treasure what we have when we have it, as it will all be gone the moment you close your eyes.
Before Your Eyes is available now on Steam.
