Boyfriend Dungeon has you taking several romance-able weapons into battle against living version of your fears and anxieties.
Content Warning – Stalking, emotional manipulation, unwanted advances
You play as your own choice of character (with some really nice character creator options!), setting out into a world filled with hot potential dates and dangerous dungeons to take them through. Each available weapon has a personality and human form to go along with it, encouraging you to not only find someone you want to get cozy with, but someone you want with you in a dungeon crawl. Do killing living drink glasses for a date is definitely new, but seems fun?
These various enemies represent some of your personal hang-ups, loaning the combat a connection to your character’s personality along the way. Not that your own feelings won’t become apparent as you start navigating dating life with the various weapon folks that live in town (which have a variety of personalities, not all of which are good). It’s a frank look at the trials, warmth, dangers, and comforts that can be found while looking for someone you like, giving a robust look at everything that comes with trying to find yourself while finding someone for you. It can be a lot at times, but the game’s charm and humor help make things easier to accept when the story goes to some dark places.
Boyfriend Dungeon is an impressive mixture of dungeon crawling action RPG and dating sim, all put together with some stunning presentation (the colors, visuals, and music are AMAZING), and one that explores many elements of the dating scene and being alone in a new city.
Boyfriend Dungeon is available now on the Nintendo eShop and Steam.
