Blazing Chrome brings some fast-paced running and gunning to this week’s IGP First Look. Expect aggressive mechanical beasts in striking wastelands (and Joel’s feeble attempts to survive them).
An homage to Contra from a developer that has already shown that they are truly skilled at making new games with that retro challenge, Blazing Chrome starts off challenging and never really lets up. Enemies are highly aggressive and expertly positioned to make your life difficult. You’ve got a solid machine gun to mow them down with, as well as a handful of other tools to shoot enemies with. Chain lasers, chargeable beams, and hurled grenades will tear through foes, but if you die while holding them (and one hit is all it takes), you’ll lose that precious tool. Given that these guns all have very useful applications in certain combat situations, you’re going to want to keep them.
You can also collect some robot buddies for some loving machine friendships! They’ll protect you, speed you up, or provide some cover fire. They are the best and you will feel a powerful guilt every time you let one die.
With these weapons, you’ll work your way through some sharp-looking pixel art wastelands, or find yourself hurtling along on speeder bikes as you try to catch up to a train. The game’s all about explosive spectacle and dangerous firefights, and you’ll need to practice a great deal to survive the onslaught of clever bosses (why do they have SO MANY DIFFERENT ATTACKS?!) and smart enemies if you hope to see the end. On Normal. I’m not sure I’m mentally prepared to see what Hardcore Mode entails.
Blazing Chrome is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.
