Our IGP First Look at 90’s internet exploration game Hypnospace Outlaw has us bringing swift, brutal internet justice down on first grade teachers and empty nesters who would DARE use a copyright cartoon character for funny jokes and class projects.
The web is the new Wild West, filled with Celtic designers, cranky website raters, and hot butter ice cream makers. It doesn’t sound like a hotbed for digital crime, but that’s where you’re wrong. As a new enforcer, it’s up to you to locate cyber crimes and report them, making a few bucks for yourself in the process. It’s a tough job when you’re shutting down old ladies and children’s educators, but someone has to do it. After a bit of training, that is.
Well, unless that someone gets lost in the incredible depth of sites that the developers have created for Hypnospace Outlaw. For those who used the internet in the 90’s, this game will be a near-painful look back at the pixellated messes we used to look up. The music, appearance, and general vibe are all a journey back to the internet’s humble beginnings, and are a staggering achievement when one just starts wandering among the many, many sites that are available. Which is nice when you’re feeling a twinge of guilt for picking on someone for liking an old cartoon.
With some hints of a narrative threading through it, and with a budding discomfort in your actions within the game, Hypnospace Outlaw looks to make very intriguing use of its premise right from the start.
Hypnospace Outlaw is available now on Steam.
