NUTS‘ trailer asks us what a squirrel would be doing with dynamite and matches in its nut hoard. I’ve got to say, I really need to know the answer.
As a recent graduate, you’ve picked up some work observing where squirrels nest in Melmoth Forest. To do that, you’ll be living in a tiny trailer for a while, setting up cameras throughout the forest and surrounding area to see if you can capture the squirrels’ behavior. At night, you’ll go over the footage from the daytime, seeing if you’re on the right track. You’re the one who has to position their cameras, so try to get a good angle on things if you want to do your job right.
The vibrant look of the game, while stunning, also puts me in a mindset that there is something a bit strange in the area. It’s quite beautiful in the daytime, but as you go through the tapes at night, you’ll start to find some concerning things. Nothing that can make the views any less impressive, but you’ll still find some stuff that may have you wary. Again, why do squirrels have dynamite? The answers might seem silly, but they’re likely far more bizarre than you’d expect.
NUTS is a visually-captivating game, and creates a mystery that really makes you feel involved in the process of solving it. Having to aim your cameras and track the squirrels made me feel quite clever, and the odd events surrounding the tiny animals make the game difficult to put down until you have your answers.
NUTS is available now on the Nintendo Switch, the Humble Store, Apple Arcade, itch.io, and Steam.
