Inspired by The Oregon Trail, The Caribbean Sail takes players on a high seas journey during the 1700’s, tasking them with surviving and thriving (without dying of scurvy).
Sailing the world during the 1700’s was not exactly an easy or quick thing to do. Crews needed to be fed. Reefs needed to be navigated. Pirates needed to be repelled. Lollygaggers needed to be flogged. It’s a lot to do, especially when you’re at the mercy of the wind, storms, sickness, and many other troubling events that can occur in the endless blue. The Caribbean Sail aims to capture it all, having players deal with each emergency in turn, lest they find themselves sinking or piloting a ship of ghosts.
Your task is to sail across the Atlantic, preferably intact. While doing this, you’re free to tackle the journey as you see fit, choosing when to fish for food, whether to then give that food to your crew, or flog them for complaining about hunger. Piracy may be an issue for you, or you can choose to become a pirate yourself and take out other ships, stealing their cargo. Every part of this dangerous, slow journey is up to you.
That said, randomized dangers await in the form of reefs, narwhal attacks, skirmishes with other ships, disease, typhoons, and other events that can screw up your day. You choose how to fight back or avoid these dangers as well, and in doing so, get a glimpse into just how difficult and slow sailing life was during this time period.
Or you could unlock the really good ships and just cruise on through.
The Caribbean Sail is available for $11.99 on Itch.io and Steam.
