Priscilla “Pri” Vate was a child prodigy, putting her crime-solving skills to work busting crime until one case broke her.
Years later, when the killer she put away is about to go free, she finds herself back on the beat, seeing if she still has the gut and instinct for detective work in visual novel When the Shutter Stops.
Your job is to help Pri work a case all others feel is closed, stopping a killer before they can strike again. To do this, you’ll enlist the help of your (self-appointed) partner, Mads, and work together to find suspects, interrogate them using the game’s dialogue system, and stay on the trail by making smart choices. Despite the seemingly-cute appearance of child detective Pri from the past, though, the game features some dark bad endings should you make poor calls. This is a dangerous case you’re working, after all.
Danger doesn’t mean there’s no time for romance on the beat, though. You can work on your relationship skills alongside your detective skills in When the Shutter Stops, growing closer to some of the male and female characters you meet during your journey. Don’t feel like you HAVE to juggle your dating life with the case, though, as you can just as easily eschew romance altogether.
When the Shutter Stops aims to offer a gripping mystery and sense of danger, yet also a tenderness and humor through Pri’s interactions with those she may grow to care for. Expect to go through a great deal of emotions as you help her on the case and lead her back into the career she had to leave so long ago.
A demo for When the Shutter Stops is currently available on Itch.io. The title can also be wishlisted on Steam, and its development can be supported through Kickstarter.
