Prepare to die again and again and again, but with new bits of story, in this upgraded release of gruesome, puzzling, and shocking horror game The Witch’s House MV.
Saying that you will die often in the original 2012 release of The Witch’s House is putting things very mildly. The Witch’s House is a place of traps that will bring about many a quick, unsettling end for our protagonist, Viola, and almost every single move you make (or don’t make) will bring about the poor girl’s end. These deaths range from the sickening to the absurd, and come almost constantly, ensuring every step you take is something you think about.
The Witch’s House is not just a mansion filled with death, but also adventure game puzzles. Players will need to use logic to figure out the varied mechanisms and cruel devices around the house to get through it, juggling that with the ever-present threat of death.
The Witch’s House MV updates the look of the classic, chilling horror game, bringing new visuals to the ghastly house and its denizens. The story has also undergone a new localization to spruce it up, and along with this comes some new story elements and dialogues with its characters. That said, you’ll need to try the game’s most ruthless new difficulty mode to see them, so expect to somehow die even more than usual to learn the game’s new secrets. Should dying grow old for you, though, a new easier difficulty mode will make things a little less murder-y around the house.
The Witch’s House exuded tension, loading every decision with the threat of a lethal end that felt like it would stop your heart in its suddenness. That its chilling story is expanded upon, and that its brutal ends can somehow get even harder, offers some powerful reasons to try The Witch’s House MV.
The Witch’s House MV is available for $14.99 on Steam.
