As long as you’re standing on solid ground in kuso, you can make a checkpoint. Not that it will make the game’s brutal minimalist platforming a whole lot easier.
kuso takes you and your endangered stick friend across forty one stages filled with flaming jets, exposed electricity, acid baths, huge saws, and all manner of things that should at least have a guard rail around them or something. You need to help your poor friend through these gauntlets of traps with only your running and jumping abilities, staying light on your feet if you want to keep them in one piece.
While you;re wondering what got your pal into this mess, you might slip up and tumble into something slightly lethal. Luckily, the character bounces back at whatever checkpoint you choose to set up, as you can pick where you respawn (so long as it’s nice, flat, safe ground). The trouble is, kuso might not leave you with many safe spots as it moves into harder and harder areas, so don’t expect this power to make your journey too easy.
Once you start getting the hang of kuso, you can try out 2-player races across stages, tackle the Time Attack mode for a solid time, or go for speedrunning records on the game’s leaderboards. You can also poke around for some hidden secrets if speed isn’t your thing, or just enjoy the unique music track for each stage. If none of them interest you, you can always take a moment to write a letter to the Health and Safety department of whoever built this facility. They definitely deserve an earful.
kuso is available for $4.99 on the Humble Store, Itch.io, Steam, and the Nintendo Switch eShop.
