Point-capture based real-time strategy game Super Combat Squadron is only in early alpha, but already comes complete with a surfeit of content and an amazing style.
Super Combat Squadron, from Lax Viking Games, is a real-time strategy game which takes heavy visual inspiration from the Advance Wars series. The biggest change is that, unlike the series which inspired it, it all plays out in real-time.
This initially might seem like it would be a problem. However, Super Combat Squadron replaces the turn-based instant location captures with a mad dash for capture points, which must then be held while the process completes. This actually translates exceptionally well, and means that players would definitely be wise to mass build infantry (a normal RTS strategy anyway) to expand their reach across the battlefield. From there, as the terrain is gobbled up, a switch to more technical or mechanized troops is only sensible.
As such, even in its early development stage, Super Combat Squadron already nails the push for expansion which many games of the genre lack. This does, however, mean that most matches will be over within about 10 minutes, and much faster if you have not adjusted to the aggressive AI.
Online matchmaking is already in for the alpha, although it is currently only 1v1, something which I hope will be changed in the final version of the game. It would also be nice to see more of the wacky commanders it touts — I’ll likely be playing as the cat in a box, thank you.
Super Combat Squadron’s alpha can be played now (in browser) on the game’s Itch.io, Kongregate, Newgrounds, or Titotu pages.
This game looks heavily inspired by Advance Wars. So I’m sure that this game would be awesome. But this game sounds more challenging because it plays out in real time. The music’s nice. I’ll check the alpha version today.
