Ever watch a leaf flit through the air, dancing on the wind before it pokes you right in the eye? That’s how the bosses of Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight feel. Well, if you can beat them.
In its new Nintendo Switch release, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight follows Kaho, a priestess who could go to war with the contents of a Fall lawn. She needs to gain an audience with the Queen to have a curse lifted. Naturally, getting to royalty involves a bit more than paperwork and appointments, requiring a daunting journey across a dying countryside filled with dangerous foes.
Kaho can use her fighting leaf to create dizzying combos, battering foes and bosses with fearsome foliage. You’re able to do a quick roll to get out of the way of anyone annoyed at your leaf beatings, and can also use several spells to keep laying down damage. And you can use arrows, which leads you to wonder why you’re swinging a leaf around.
When not fighting with plant life, you can explore the vast lands of Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. They’re filled with hidden lore and useful items, as well as delightful oddballs to meet. You can even skew the difficulty levels down a bit if all you want to do is explore, or ramp them up if you like getting stomped by bosses. Still, do take some time to savor the lovely lands and creatures laid out before you. The developer does wonderful things with pixel artwork, and it would be a waste not to drink it in.
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.
