The World Next Door showcases a quick-thinking combat system and a unique-looking cast. You’ll be put in the hot seat in both combat and conversation as you navigate the intricacies of this magical, dangerous world.
The World Next Door revolves around Jun, who won the chance to visit a magical world only open to those who win the rarest of lotteries. Unfortunately, she’ll be extending her stay – indefinitely. Players will assume the role of Jun and, with the help of your quirky friends, find a way home. Of course, with any good action adventure, you’ll have your fair share of hurdles to jump.
In the action combat, players will be in a battlefield lit up with different symbols. A group of 3 or more allows players to cast a spell, depending on the type of rune. Since they are randomly generated, players will have to sometimes pick up a rune and more it to a more suitable area. They can also choose to create larger groups of runes to deal more devastating damage. Different spells have different effects, too, so make sure you experiment and know what each one does before putting yourself in a tricky situation.
After you’ve bested your enemies, you’ll be able to enjoy some breathtaking art in both character and level design. The World Next Door’s characters are absolutely gorgeous and have a very individualistic style and personality. You may find yourself wanting to win their favor. Playing Jun, players will be able to react to certain pieces of conversation to get a rise out of their favorite characters. Personally, I was chomping at the bit to prove myself to the hot-headed Horace, as terrifying as he may be. It’s hard not to become attached to this group of mythical beings and their light conversation amidst a terrifying prospect.
Will you be able to help Jun in her perilous predicament and make close bonds along the way?
The World Next Door is available on Nintendo Switch, Steam, Humble Store, Itch.io, and GoG.
