Like a kind of reverse Mega Man, Overwhelm gives enemies special power-ups when you beat a boss, making them tougher and stronger with each major battle you win.
Overwhelm casts you out into gloomy, crimson-tinged caverns with little direction and constant danger. You’re able to choose your path through them, tackling areas as you see fit, but you’ve only got three lives to make it through them all. Oh yeah, and you die in one hit. Not a lot of room for mistakes.
How you tackle the game can be one of those mistakes, though. Bosses grant their abilities to all of the enemies in the game upon defeat, rather than giving the player any power-ups. This makes the game’s challenge escalate in a hurry, depending on which boss you kill, so you’ll want to be careful of which enemy power you give to everyone out in the world.
If that sounds a bit challenging, Overwhelm‘s new release on the Nintendo Switch might be able to give you a bit of a break. This version offers an all-new co-op mode, letting your bring in a partner to watch your back in these lethal caves. Your pal can revive you, or just distract enemies to make it a bit easier to survive. Not that I would ever say that surviving is EASY. You just stand a slightly better chance of not becoming a bloody smear on the already-red caves.
Overwhelm is available now on the Nintendo Switch, Itch.io, and Steam.
