Ritual of the Moon will have you doing daily meditation activities as you explore the mindset of a witch who’s been banished to the moon, leaving her beloved behind on Earth.
The Earth’s Council has banished a witch to the moon upon the discovery of her powers, forever separating her from the woman she loves. Doomed to forever gaze upon the world her beloved lives upon, she’s forced to dwell upon her existence here. You’ll share her feelings across twenty-eight days in short bursts, returning to the game multiple times over four weeks as you share in her feelings, memories, and a final decision about what to do about all this.
Ritual of the Moon draws you into daily meditation activities, using puzzles, drawing, and daily mantras to explore your own thoughts. It will also track all of these recorded instances, following your mood to the game’s conclusion. There are six possible endings you can shoot for, although it might go against the game’s purpose to force your way to one type of ending or another (to me, at least). It simply expects to follow how you feel.
This experience is further enhanced by being made up of handcrafted and found objects. The various reflections were hand-embroidered, the mantras were wood burned, and various other physical objects like wool and clay were used to make the game’s objects and locales. The experience of crafting was a meditative process for the game’s creators themselves, creating an intriguing circle of thoughtfulness and reflection with the creation and experience of the game as it took shape, and as it is played. It’s an incredible experience – one well worth taking a few minutes each day.
Ritual of the Moon is available now on Itch.io, Steam, and the App Store.
