Lorelai has lost a great deal in her life, but means to get it all back from the monstrous things in her house and in her life. She won’t let death stand in her way, either, but is death the worst thing that can happen to you?
Lorelai is the conclusive part of R. Michalski’s Devil Came Through Hereadventure trilogy, which featured the exquisitely chilling The Cat Lady and Downfall. The store page for the game is quite cryptic, but says that the game follows its title character of the same name as she tries to fight back against the horrors that have taken something from her. And that she’s escaping from the horrors within her own family home. Based on the developer’s past work, these horrors are likely psychological, deeply upsetting, and utterly terrifying.
Michalski excels at putting the player in surreal, unsettling situations and having them navigate their nightmare-like environs. This new game looks no different, showcasing a flare for the macabre as Lorelai makes her way through realistic places filled with unreal things. Their use of shadow and darkness on the characters also creates this sense of menace within the game’s cast, using a few streaks of darkness to turn a normal person into a disturbed, dangerous being. It’s something to see, and you already get hints at it from the trailer.
Lorelai doesn’t give much away with its store description, but with its chilling art and the developer’s pedigree for psychological horror, it doesn’t much need to. Just keep in mind that I mean it when I said that death is far from the worst thing that can happen to you in their games. Lorelai might not let death stop her from getting what she wants, but that might only mean some tremendous suffering is in store for her (and you).
Lorelai is available now on the Humble Store, GOG, and Steam.
