Biologically, the spleen plays a huge role in filtering the blood of our bodies. Pamplemousse Games’ Spleen, a hand-drawn 2D RPG, has the spleen in the form of a malevolent, omniscient force that the protagonist, Johann, must defeat.
Johann’s tale is split into two sides – adult and child. With the help of Splénétik, a rogue catlike creature, he enters the Kid World and attempts to gain some semblance of a life back. Without giving too much away, Johann must balance his duties in the adult world and fight the manifestations of his negative emotions in the Kid World.
Ultimately, he must confront the Spleen, the pulsating evil that threatens to take over adult Johann. With each successive defeat, he will find more opportunities to regain the life he once had. Just don’t neglect adult Johann’s well-being as you work to overcome this creature. You need to help him find a way out of routine and find time for his friends, meet new people, and relax at home to take care of his mental well-being. It’s hard to overcome evil while burnt out, after all.
With beautiful hand-drawn art done by German-French artist Yann Penno, and a soundtrack by Neha Patel, this game promises many twists and surprises! Currently, Spleen is on Kickstarter and they are almost halfway to their goal.
In our next feature length, we will be interviewing both Penno himself and Alexandre Viens, the head designer and programmer of Spleen. Stay tuned for it!
Spleen is currently on Kickstarter, with the campaign ending on June 1st, 2019. For more information, visit the official Pamplemousse Games website or follow the development of the game on Twitter.
