This week’s IGP First Look takes us to the ever-shifting dungeons of Neverinth, facing down clever monsters in challenging combat as we strive to become worthy of being Valkyries. Which…we are definitely not.
Neverinth takes you to generated labyrinths on each run, giving the game a variety of ways to surprise you with its enemy placements. Expect to get ganked often if you aren’t playing carefully, and even if you are, the large, well-thought out enemy groups will often punish you. You need to be very careful in these bikini girl-worshiping catacombs. It’s a strangely-hostile religion, honestly.
Even at this first glance, the game offers many different combat tools, from equipment with neat bonuses to a plethora of possible weapons to suit many play styles. You can also find a few different characters to suit how you like to fight, and can make use of some sharp mechanics (like running adding speed to slow attacks, but causing you to take temporary damage in exchange). Even in Early Access, the game felt like it was opening up with new tools and abilities quickly, always encouraging you to push forward.
A little roguelike danger also adds some spice to its Souls-inspired formula, making for a game that already has its hooks in me. Well-worth checking out for action game fans who like to be stomped a little bit.
Also, giants in long johns are hilarious. Or frightening. I really haven’t settled on which yet. Well, probably frightening. Long johns just make me uncomfortable.
Neverinth is available now on Steam Early Access.
