Rather than just blast foes in this week’s IGP First Look, we’re surrounding them with balls so that we can blow them up in Voidrun. It seems we’re the ones who will be blowing up more, though.
Voidrun gives a set amount of explosive balls that you need to use to surround enemies. If you can enclose them in a circle of these bombs, you’ll blow them up. Do this to all of the enemies in an area and you’ll move onto the next. That said, swooping around an enemy that is actively trying to shoot you down isn’t exactly easy. You need to give them a wide berth, but with a limited amount of balls you can drop, you also have to move quickly and cut tight circles to minimize movement. This results in a challenging tightrope walk that keeps dragging you back in.
Did I mention you have to pick your balls back up after you use them? Sure, you vacuum them up, but you can still run out of shots and then have to retrieve them while dodging enemy blasts. And since the screen wraps back on itself, those blasts you thought you dodged can come back in some fun (lethal) ways). This game can get pretty hard.
Some solid chiptunes and a sharp visual style add to the appeal, making it easier to deal with your constant deaths. Also, there’s a system of randomized power-ups that will help you out by increasing your retrieval radius, have your balls automatically return, gain extra lives, and do many other things that will make each run feel different. Voidrun is a pretty sharp arcade game – one whose challenge just made me want to play more.
Voidrun is available now on Itch.io and Steam.
