From first glance, players will be able to see the parallels between Scrap Story and Paper Mario, but that isn’t to say Scrap Story doesn’t stand on its own.
With its own cast and setting, Scrap Story takes players on a colorful and animated story through its mixed media of paper and cardboard.
Scrap Story has taken the foundation of Paper Mario and used it as a launching pad to make a whole new great game centralized around this adorable paper aesthetic. In the demo teaser that’s available now, players are free to explore and collect 8 hidden fruits. You may have to smash some cardboard, turn into a paper airplane, or do some paper pirouettes to get them all, though. The best thing about this teaser is checking out the beautiful world and its even adorable inhabitants. It’s overwhelmingly cute.
Scrap Story has a lot in the works, including a turn-based combat system that features partners. What is a good journey without a friend to share it with? If that wasn’t enough company for you, you can also attain ‘Guest Cards’. Being nice to villagers and giving them gifts may get you one of these sought-after cards. Using one in battle sends a request for that guest to appear, but life is tricky and they may be busy. They have lives after all. They may take a few turns, or not show up at all. Which is a hilarious mechanic.
Scrap Story has so much personality and charm that it will be hard to resist for fans of both Paper Mario and lighthearted RPGs.
