From Head to Toe takes Betty on a walk with her high school best friend Quentin, the pair exchanging memories as they march through the light snow.
You’ll share old stories on this walk, chatting with an old friend as you reflect on the past and your actions. You have a few dialogue choices, but this isn’t a game about high-stakes replies or decisions to fret over. This is a relaxed talk with an old buddy, taken on a path you used to walk on when you were kids. Through this talk of old times, the game explores themes of nostalgia and longing for those lost times.
From Head to Toe doesn’t just have Betty idly walk as you talk, though. You have to take each step to move her forward, as well as use unique controls to swing or playfully toss snowballs during your time together. The result is quite relaxing and engaging for the mind, but also reflects on how we have to choose to move forward, even if we want to linger in the moment. There’s a sense of purpose in the movement – of a choice we have a say in, and yet not. It adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, ruminating on our willingness to participate in moving forward and leaving things behind.
The game is a soothing experience in the joys of exploring old memories, the pain of watching our childhood places fade away, and the feeling of those special kinds of rare, cherished, eternal childhood friendships.
From Head to Toe is available now on Itch.io, GameJolt, Steam, and Google Play.
