You’re all excited when you think you’ve got a neat brand new game in What Remains, but all you end up with are secrets that may stop an imminent threat. BORING.
Well, not at all boring, actually. You’re coming home from a skate session to find that a game cartridge has found its way into your lap. You naturally race to your buddy’s place to give it a shot, but instead of finding yourself playing some platformer, you’re faced with an array of encrypted files and mysterious images. It’s a little concerning, especially since you’ll need to figure out these files if you’re to save the town of Sunny Peaks.
Having a friend to help you (as well as a kind cat for backup) will go a long way in unraveling these secrets, but don’t rely on them too much. You’ll want to hurry things along yourself, because while you’re working on these strange files, you’ll find your town of Sunny Peaks is constantly changing for the weirder. Not that the eighties backdrop doesn’t already make things a little bit weird to begin with.
What Remains aims to offer some charming nostalgia alongside some dangerous mystery and tales of heartwarming friendships. It’s also got a touch of that mystery that surrounds a strange new game you’ve just discovered, capturing that sense of surprise, delight, and horror that can come from finding out what your new game is actually like.
What Remains is available now as an NES rom on itch.io, or you can order a physical cartridge of the game from the developer’s site.
