Repeat after me, ‘I am Mr. Flipper, the only flipper in a crazy pinball world.’ There, that’s all of the tutorial that you get in Willem Rosenthal‘s Mr. Flipper, an entry in the recent Game Maker’s Toolkit Jam.
The jam, which revolved around the theme of ‘Only One,’ was certainly taken literally when it came to the Pinball Action fusion. Chaos truly ensues when you realize that you have to rush from bottleneck to bottleneck in order to keep progressing up the screen, all while also having to take into consideration the facing alignment of your character.
There’s definitely a learning curve, and it might even take a while for you to notice that there is one there, but once discovered, it turns out that Mr. Flipper‘s tricks are not wholly dissimilar to that of pinball. Awareness of the paths and routes, combined with careful aiming, is easily the best way to actually get anywhere. Master this and it turns into quite a long game, with plenty of extras to give out to the curious.
Mr. Flipper is available now on itch.io.
