The seeds you plant in your garden will alter the music that plays within it, letting you carefully cultivate your own songs of creation in touching narrative adventure Mutazione.
You play as fifteen-year-old Kai, and you’ve arrived to the community of Mutazione to help your ailing grandfather. He happens to live in a settlement that was struck by the meteor “Moon Dragon” years ago. The results of that impact have altered those who lived there, creating a group of (mostly) good-natured mutants. You can feel free to spend some time with these kindly creatures as you help out your grandfather.
As you immerse yourself in small-town life and gossip, you can stop to soothe yourself with a little gardening. You can collect seeds from various plants all over the game, then take them back to your own garden and plant whatever you like. Each plant carries musical qualities above their aesthetic value, so you can actually shape the song that plays within your garden based on what you grow within it. It’s a wonderful touch, and allows for musical creativity without a lot of pressure to perform or sound a certain way.
Mutazione does some intriguing things with its secret places to discover, its touching story of family, and the hidden dramas of the people of this city, but it’s that experimental playfulness that it offers through its gardening music that makes for a delightful stay in this place.
Mutazione is available now on PS4, Apple Arcade, itch.io, GameJolt, GOG, and Steam.
