The delivery guys usually leave exhausted when helping me move. Moving Out‘s gameplay reminds me of those guys, but here, they’re all too happy to break OSHA laws.
My house could be an IKEA showroom stand-in. Instead of quaint minimalism, the house is covered in Pikachu merchandise — plush toys, cutlery, clothing — you name it. They rest atop the various bits of IKEA furniture my father has put together. Not easy stuff to move if you’re being careful, but what if you didn’t have to be?
As a newly-certified Furniture Arrangement & Relocation Technician (F.A.R.T), my friend and I were ready to do the job regardless of how much got broken along the way. During our moving journey in the town of Packmore, it became more evident that our boss was concerned about ratings (and profit), and we were way too compliant to care. Moving Out tasks you with one simple goal: move everything on time. Intact is optional.
Despite this, nothing is said on how you’re supposed to move the items. This is where the chaos (and fun) kicks in — you can break windows, bust doors, and generally be a legal vandal. In our quest to move everything fast, we leaped over broken panes, threw boxes, and smacked a ghost or two. A little teamwork helped get the heavy objects out, but overall, it was a wild rush to get things out from start to finish.
Moving Out also features hidden objectives that are unlocked after you complete a level for the first time. Rewards come in the form of coins for the Packmore Arcade. There is a three-tier scoring system tied to time which encourages replayability whether you care about the extra objectives or not, but the hidden objectives were my favorite bit. I spent more time trying to nab them than helping my friend. We did get things moved just on time, if you’re asking.
All in all, just as a previous writer enjoyed this game at PAX East, I really loved the general chaos of Moving Out, and the conversations between the characters drew plenty a chuckle. I will be playing this until I hit every objective.
Moving Out can be pre-purchased on Steam, Microsoft Store, and the Nintendo EShop in advance of its release on April 28. It will be making its way to PlayStation 4 as well.
