A nice, roaring fire is something I fondly remember from my childhood. In Pixel Fireplace, you’re basically enjoying a digital fireplace and seeing what you can do.
We had a stove that my father stoked with wood nearly year round, as he was always cold. We could roast marshmallows, add in more paper, and poke around. Now, I can do them by typing.
I do enjoy typing games, and this title (which was a part of the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality) mixes the relaxing image of a fireplace with typing. Even the title screen allows you to type the word ‘fireplace’ to start, igniting the letters as you type. Once your fire is going, you no longer receive directions and instead can play around with typing yourself. If you type a letter that’s recognized, it turns yellow. Otherwise, it’s grey.
If you think about all of the things you’d like to do with a little fire, you can probably find a lot of words to type that can then interact with the flame. I, personally, love cooking marshmallows and eating hot dogs, as well as generally adding more wood to my fire and changing the color of it.
Pixel Fireplace is a lovely little toy that you can play with or just put on your display if you want to see a warm fire near you. It’s fun to try to figure out what words will end in interactions – and everything about the game is very polished, making the simplicity of it so well done. I’ve cooked up my fill of hot dogs and put out my fire, but I am sure on a cold winter night, I’ll probably load the game right back up again.
Pixel Fireplace is available now on itch.io.
