Want to slam a demon with a colossal sword? A huge axe? A titanic hockey stick? Or something you designed yourself? Panzer Paladin has you covered.
You’re a mech (piloted by a plucky android) that needs to stomp some demons. You could do it with your metal hands, but why bother when varied weapons are lying around everywhere? The game offers a ton of different swords, axes, spears, and more that you can grab and use on enemies. These tools might break easily when swung by a huge robot, but you grab new weapons so fast that it’s hard to get upset. Just deal with the small changes in how your new weapon attacks and keep on fighting.
Weapons may be frail, but you can break them on purpose for even greater effects. Weapons all have a random special ability like healing, area damage, increased defense, or boosted attack that you use by breaking the weapon. So, if you’re careful, you can snap a crumbling axe at just the right time for an extra heal or damaging blast. Very handy against the game’s difficult, spectacular-looking bosses.
Panzer Paladin‘s varied weapons, while easy to destroy, mean that combat and your capabilities are changing constantly, creating this endless shift in how you play that keeps the weighty combat from ever feeling stale. It’s just a blast to play through, reminding me of classic retro action games like Vice: Project Doom and Metal Storm. Plus, you can make your OWN weapon in the game as well, allowing your foul mind to concoct whatever it pleases. It’s not only funny, but gives you a newfound appreciation for the striking visuals in the game when you’re trying to make your own filthy weapon through pixel art.
Panzer Paladin is available now on the Nintendo Switch and Steam.
