The Outcast Lovers has you finding someone in need in a land where foreigners tend to ‘disappear’ when discovered by the authorities.
Ola is a retired political cartoonist living as an outcast in a dangerous land. You’re in a position where you really don’t want to make further trouble for yourself, but this is when a person in dire need comes to you. Given that foreigners are being picked up by the English Protection Group and are never seen again, you know that something awful will happen to this person if you hand them over to the authorities. What will happen if you don’t do it and get caught, though?
The game walks a taut tightrope through these conflicting desires in you, seeing you struggle to decide whether to help this person or keep yourself out of trouble. Is it more worthwhile to live if you cast someone out to suffer and die, or dare you risk bringing a cruel fate down on yourself by taking this person in and helping them? It seems like it should be an easy call, but given the cruelties that so many turn their backs on in our daily lives now, perhaps it’s something we should examine with great care.
Offering the ability to choose how direct the camera to capture the story (allowing for some delightful cinematography if you want to tinker with it), The Outcast Lovers offers a moral quandary I think we could all stand to think about these days.
