Classic games have inspired many different spin-offs in all manner of titles, so we’ve collected a handful of games inspired by Chess, Solitaire, Minesweeper and Pinball.
I’ve played so many games inspired by classics and have enjoyed all of the different takes on them. After playing many, many different games that have taken classics and put their twist on them, I wanted to create a list of my favorites. And here they are:
Knight-errant
Taking the concept of Chess and splitting up the board, Knight-errant starts you off on a normal chess board, playing a knight who can only move like the Chess piece. Soon, however, you will find yourself coming off the board and onto the world beyond, trying to make your way around. Clicking on your knight will show you what tiles you can move to, and soon, you’ll end up battling against other pieces, trying to move in a way that destroys them and keeps you alive. It’s a challenging game that follows so many different aspects of Chess, but brings its own twist to it.
You can find Knight-errant on itch.io.
Regency Solitaire
When it comes to classics like Solitaire, there are tons of spin-offs of the game itself, like Spider and Freecell, but Regency Solitaire comes with a story, other games within it, and Solitaire itself sprinkled about. Taking place in London, Brighton, and Bath, you can visit historical locations of past times as you okay as Bella, a woman who wants to make her ballroom much more grand. There are over 20 chapters of story as you continue your quest, which is quite a lot to take in!
Regency Solitaire is available now on Steam.
DemonCrawl
DemonCrawl combines a roguelike with Minesweeper, giving you a bunch of different collectables, powers, themes, and more. Finding various tokens while you play will allow you to get talents which change the way that you play the game. The levels come in a huge variety, breaking away from that grey screen that you might remember. There are also quests, daily games, and even a classic mode if you do want to play a bit of more traditional minesweeper.
DemonCrawl is available now on Steam.
Zombie Rollerz
Pinball is actually one of my favorite games, and Zombie Rollerz takes it to a whole new level. This game has you facing off against waves of zombies, using a pinball interface to defeat them as they move forward, hoping that your ball goes to the right place. Your ball can also be used to trigger different traps, which can further help you by eliminating all of the monsters that you are facing. I first played Zombie Rollerz at a games event and really enjoyed the interface and way the game plays out.
Zombie Rollerz is available now on the App Store, and can also add it to your Steam Wishlist.
