Adios has you doing some chores. Exploring a farm. Taking some time with a friend. And likely dying at the end of the day if you listen to your conscience.
You’re a pig farmer who’s been helping out the mob with a little bit of body disposal. Seems like a pretty hands-off sort of operation. Maybe you just look the other way any time a car pulls up in the night. Ignore the dog barking at all the commotion outside. Ignore the bits of red that stain the muddy ground when you check on the animals in the morning. I’m sure you thought you could just put it all out of your mind, simply appreciating the influx of cash here and there so long as you knew when not to look outside at the right time. It’s not like you were involved in the process directly, right?
It’d wear at you, though, wouldn’t it? You could pretend you didn’t know what was going on, but deep down, you’d know you were fooling yourself. Would you wonder who those bodies used to be before the mob filled them with bullets? Well, our protagonist pig farmer has started to wonder. Wonder quite a bit, in all likelihood, as they’re now willing to die in order to make the guilt stop. It’s a steep price to pay, but this game asks us what the price of our conscience really is, and to think on it as an assassin tries to get us to reconsider.
Adios is built on an incredible premise that makes us ask ourselves some questions we might not want to know the answers to. What’s your price? Could you stand up for your convictions if your life was the price? At least this game lets you explore those thoughts from relative safety.
Adios is available now on itch.io and Steam.
