Pageturner has you adjusting a story to change how minigames play out for you, guiding the tale whether you progress or fail along the way.
Aviena and Borbu are on a big journey to Harmonia, and you’re the lucky person who gets to help them along. Their travels are laid out as a storybook, with their trials and triumphs being laid out in the text. Alongside some really cute artwork of the characters, I might add. As this pair runs into problems, though, you get to select how they deal with them from a variety of options. If you have to collect fruit to have supplies for your travels, you can choose to collect it recklessly, carefully, or quickly, for instance.
These options aren’t just to add a little energy to the story, but they’ll reshape the mechanics of whatever minigame plays out to convey the scene. So, if you chose to collect fruit carefully, you get more of it with each pickup, or if you go quickly, your movement speed will increase. Depending on what you pick, the minigames can go in many different directions, giving you a new take on the story and new ways to approach a challenge. The story will shift depending on how you do in those minigames, so finding the right phrase to choose to make the game easier for you will help a lot. Just watch out for the text while playing the minigames, as it can kind of get in the way.
Pageturner is an interesting take on having story choices affect gameplay, and makes for a lovely little adventure. Assuming you make the right choices and don’t starve the pair.
