In Imaginaria, you explore a small town in Antarctica – one designed based on a developer’s personal experience of living there for fifteen months.
Some people have a vast knowledge about areas and places – places that not many people have been able to see or experience themselves. In Imaginaria, you’ll be playing through a game drawn from a developer’s lived knowledge of such a place, seeing what it might look like at an Antarctic station and wondering about who might have been working or living around there.
Instead of a sort of documentary of what it might be like in Antarctica, as a night watcher, you can experience what it’s like while playing a point and click adventure game. There are a bunch of different scenes within the game, allowing you to wander around and interact with buildings, objects, and more. Each time you interact with an object, you are able to read a small story – a personal piece on what this building does, when they last saw this object, or about the people that may have been there during the day.
Imaginaria takes place at night, so you are exploring a peaceful and empty place, reflecting on what is around you. It’s an interesting experience that feels relaxing and slightly curious. In the bit that I got my hands on during EGX, I did not find any director or any way to ‘win’ the game, but instead found myself wondering more about the people that might live in this town or about myself and my story. It’s an interesting narrative adventure, and clearly one written with quite a bit of knowledge and care. There are over fifteen different locations to explore and all of the information you are reading is written by someone who lived in an Antarctic station – which is beyond anything I have ever experienced!
Imaginaria is available now on itch.io and Steam.
