In Fostering Apocalypse, the only thing worth saving might just be exactly what’s destroying you. It just so happens to be a cute little demon child who could use some help.
Whenever we think about the end of the whole world, we think about something bad happening. Some big evil or something wanting to destroy our whole world and ensure that nothing can survive. But, what if, the thing destroying the world is just a cute demon child? What if this child has no idea what they are doing?
You get to play as Del, a tough woman who drives around whatever is left of the world in her beat up truck, attempting to survive. At first, you don’t know much about Del at all, but when she finds the demon child who has caused this disaster, she is unable to kill this creature. Instead, she takes care of it. The demon eventually is called Barrett (her choice of name) and needs to not to be punished harshly for their actions against the world. It’s something that they seem to have little knowledge about even doing, so how can you be mad at them for it?
It’s a narrative driven adventure game, one where you are looking to find resources to keep yourself and your demon alive, all while taking on anything that happens to get in your way. A lot of the interactions are through pressing a series of keys or button mashing in hopes of finding something useful that will help you keep yourselves alive.
In Fostering Apocalypse, the world is gritty and dark. There are large scenes of narration, giving you more information on what is going on, and there is a lot to actually see and explore despite the lack of people who seem to be roaming around. I got the chance to play some of it at EGX, where I was left wondering what will become of this unlikely pair of characters.
