There has been a big variety of indie games about cats, bouncing across all kinds of genres and playstyles. We’ve captured some of our favorites here!
I love cats. If you are here you probably love cats. Wouldn’t life be easier if you were a cat? Well, who knows the answer to that, but in many video games you can play as cats or play with cats, which can be quite a fun time! I love wholesome indie games, so being able to play as cats sometimes or spend some time in worlds filled with cats is something I find really relaxing.
So I have spent some time gathering the ten best indie games about cats in case you might want to play as a cat as well. Or play with cats. Or otherwise have cats in your life.
Calico
Calico is an indie slice of life game with beautiful graphics and an open world full of fun areas to explore. You are able to make animal friends both big and small. Then, you can dance with them, feed them, carry them, and hang out with them. There are more than just cats – there are tons of other adorable animals, but the cat themselves are really fun and a huge part of the game. You can run a cat café while you play, but it’s quite casual, and you can spend time instead just exploring and enjoying this world. If you do feel like running your own cat café, go ahead and decorate it, pick out sweets to sell, or maybe just dance in a flower field with your friends.
Fisti-Fluffs
Fisti-Fluffs is a chaotic cat game that puts a few different felines all alone in a house full of items. Bored, they start attacking each other, running around, flailing, and causing a load of damage to the house. As they break things, you can see a running tally of the cost of everything being destroyed, giving you a high score to keep track of. There are also a lot of customisation options for your particular cat, which is really lovely if you want to make one just like yours or one you like.
Katjepult
Katijepult is a platformer where you play as an extremely happy cat just running in a field of grass, collecting little stones along the way. It’s so adorable and such a different game, visually. The visuals are made from embroidery, making for a unique, captivating world. The cat itself is so adorable, and it’s so fun to watch them jump around and enjoy the world. Katjepult is just a relaxing, fun game.
Six Cats Under
Six Cats Under is an adorable and heartwarming (but somewhat sad) game about becoming a ghost and spending some time playing around with a host of cats. These cats are in one house, where you can interact lightly with the world – turn on a stove, flick around a plant – to try to get their attention or guide them. Playing around with the house, toying the world, and interacting with these cute cats is a fun time, despite your real-world time with them being gone. It may tug at your heartstrings a bit if you think about it too much, though.
Cat President 2
Cat President 2 is a wacky cat game to add to this list. It takes place in an alternate reality where humans have been banned from politics, and now cats are in charge. You now need to work at figuring out which one of the current six cute cats needs to win the election, then help them. It’s your first time becoming a campaign manager, but you can figure your way out in this narrative game.
MaoMao Castle
MaoMao Castle is a retro-inspired game where you get to control a giant cat dragon as it flies to its castle in the sky. Controlling this giant cat dragon is a delight, and it’s quite fun to watch it swerve and move through the world. You can run across the grass, dash through walls or pillars, and collect rainbows that give you more points. Your castle might be far away, and a cat dragon might not EXACTLY be a cat, but this game gives big, wholesome cat vibes.
I catch you
I catch you is a narrative-driven detective game that deserves place in this list of the best indie games about cats. In it, you are one of the few cats left in a world full of both dogs and crimes. You can use your cat nose to sniff out clues, you can talk to various individuals, and you can put everything you learn together to solve the crimes that have been committed this week. Despite being a very human-like cat, you can also do cat-like things like play with a little toy mouse or knock a glass off of the table.
Unfamiliar
Unfamiliar allows you to dress up and play as a witch’s cat, looking for ingredients and helping your owner. You can collect various items to craft things, you can mess around making new hats and accessories, and take up several other activities throughout the game. You can manage a garden full of magical ingredients, expand your tree house, and find secret areas to explore and understand. There isn’t any time pressure, which creates a really relaxing experience.
Cuddle Up
Cuddle Up showcases what happens when you have too many cats that want to snuggle in bed with you. You are laying in bed, maybe with some of your belongings, and you will need to fit all of your strangely shaped cats on the bed with you so that everyone can sleep comfortably. Fitting these cats in your bed is challenging, but appealing, and there is a grid to guide you if you need help. Plus, everyone looks adorable while they are sleeping.
Cateau
Cateau is a personal favorite and one of the best indie games about cats. It’s a visual novel that contains three different, distinct cats that are roaming the streets of Paris. You are able to watch for clues in the text and observe their cat behavior to understand more about them and what they like. As you get to know them and interact with them, you are able to grow your relationships and become closer with them. You can then talk to your roommate, who hasn’t been feeling quite herself lately, to tell her about your adventures as well. She can end up giving feedback which can then help you with your relationship with these cats as you get to know them more.
