Punching your way through the mean streets of One Night in Tokyo would be hard for a regular person. Someone who can change into a werewolf, though?
This action experience is an advergame for metal band Beast in Black, and follows the story of a track off of their new album, Dark Connection. In it, you decide, on a whim, to take a journey that will lead you into conflict with futuristic soldiers and demonic beasts. Which is usually what happens when you decide to go out one night when you know you really should have just stayed home. The track and video are fun and catchy, and feel right as home as the background music for a Streets of Rage-inspired beat ’em up.
The game consists of a single stage, and you can play as either of the characters from the music video. You don’t get as many powerful laser guns as the video, but feet and hands seem to suffice when you’re beating up sci-fi soldiers. Although they all have guns, so you’ll need to keep them staggered if you don’t want to get blasted to pieces. As you work through the streets, you’re going to want to look for gemstones as well. If you can find all of these, you can give yourself the power to shapeshift into your own beast mode, which is different for both characters. In this mode, you stand a better chance against the mecha godzilla-looking boss of the area and getting out of danger.
One Night in Tokyo is a short beat ’em up experience (you may need something like Fight’N Rage if you want to spend a good amount of time punching faces), but makes for a fun introduction to the band and their music through some solid beatdowns.
One Night in Tokyo is playable for free from the Beast in Black site.
