In Momotype, the world’s population is depleted from plagues. Industry is about to collapse. You know what will fix that? A living, breathing virtual pet.
Those dang Tamagotchis have gotten us all in trouble again. People were just so busy feeding and caring for their virtual pals that they up and forget to have real children. Well, that and the world’s population seems to have been devastated by a plague. But that’s really just a minor problem next to all those dang kids and their tech toys, right? Well, either way, the world is facing a shortage of people. So, what does the business world do for a solution? Provide day care? Provide maternity leave? Make it easier to have children and care for them while working? Nah, let’s give them a virtual pet, but make it alive!
Now, my virtual dog growing up didn’t need much except food, play, and some cleanup. And I STILL killed it. So, when you find yourself caring for a virtual pet that’s real, some issues might crop up. Not only do you have to really take care of its needs (it’s a living thing and not just a little handheld game, now), but you have to care for its mental state. And given the way the world is, that may be a challenge. Things are looking pretty grim in this game’s reality (although is the REAL world much better these days), and this can weigh down on your new friend. How will you help this new life form come to terms with the bleakness of reality? What will you do to make their life easier? And what will you accidentally do to make things worse?
Momotype is an intriguing look at how we might raise a living thing in a dark future, and also examines our relationships with the digital creatures we’ve befriended over the years. Hopefully, it’ll make you feel a little something more for all of those digital animals and pets we’ve long forgotten years ago.
Momotype is available now on itch.io and Steam.
