Grow: Song of the Evertree lets you build and care for charming communities, raise beautiful living things, and tend to whole worlds of surprises.
This game’s world used to be beautiful, but over time, a withering came and destroyed what was once dear. You are the last human here, having decided to stay behind to help bring the world back to a functioning and good state.
Grow: Song of the Evertree is a slice of life indie game full of adventure where you start off in a small world. Here, you end up growing segments of a tree which slowly becomes full of flowers, life, fish, and animals that you can adopt. All you need to do is spend some time cleaning and growing the area, washing animals who have been caught in the withering, and defeating any sort of goo-monsters that appear.
You have a talking book and strange copper pot that help you, but they can’t really leave the house you are in. So, most of your journey is with yourself and your flying creature (who can take you up the tree to the various spaces where you transform the land). As you help nurture the tree by breaking down rocks, singing to plants, and planting seeds, you will find yourself growing along with the world. Most of your initial days will be on these world platforms, growing them and seeing what they unlock. Some of the areas have little puzzles as you begin to make them grow, and as you collect items, you can find ways to use these items to help make more things.
Back at the base of the tree, where your home is, you can create a village for explorers who want to visit your town. Shops like bakeries, inns, and florists will be unlocked. You can build houses for people who want to move to your town as well and give them their dream jobs. You can talk to them each day and give them gifts so that they can grow and be better at what they do. As your town grows, you will unlock more of the area and slowly defeat the wither.
Grow: Song of the Evertree also has alchemy systems, which are how you will build some of the more complex buildings. You can take items you have gathered and bring them to Coppertop, who will break them down into their essence. That can then be used to create a bunch of different items. As you open up shops, you can also purchase things like decorations for houses or fun items to give to the townspeople.
There is a lot going on in Grow: Song of the Evertree. The world is always evolving. People you knew from before the withering sometimes pop up, and there is a large amount of story progression as you develop the town. Once you have completely finished the first seed, you can unlock more areas to continue to build up, and you can take more time to explore the base of the tree. There are hidden areas, there are places where you can gather items right by your home, and there are tons of characters to get to know.
This game is full of stuff to do, and can easily take up several days of your time, especially as there is just so much to see and do. I ended up creating several more seeds, over the course of a month, building up my villages, ensuring my villagers had all of their dream jobs, and continuing to find song fragments to get rid of the witherings. It is an amazing and captivating game.
After finishing my first seed, I honestly could not wait for my second seed in Grow: Song of the Evertree, as it’s a game I am sure I will continue playing. I got the chance to check out a short experience of it at EGX, where I was told that this game is sort of endless, and I know that I can definitely find endless ways to spend my time in this world.
Grow: Song of the Evertree is available now on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam.
