Retired Men’s Nude Beach Volleyball League explores the many questions and difficult feelings that come in the later years of life. AND there’s naked volleyball.
Len is retired, and finding he has a fair bit of spare time on his hands these days. While that sounds great, having too much time to yourself with nothing to occupy your mind can be rough on a person. Finding ways to fill that time with family and friends is vital to keeping your mental health together. Thankfully, Len stumbles across a secret nude volleyball league to keep himself busy. And since he’s far less bashful than myself, he joins.
Playing volleyball IS a part of the game, but that isn’t the main part. Neither is the nakedness, if you’re not super keen on seeing aging genitals flapping in the breeze. The game is more about laying your emotions bare alongside the gentleman you’re playing with. Your deepest fears and worries, as well as your more troubling thoughts and emotions, all come out throughout the volleyball games. And off the court as well as you work through Len’s story. The title made the game feel like it would be some sort of crass game, but it does a wonderful job of exploring some questions and feelings we’ll all face as we age. Unsurprising, given the mixture of thoughtfulness and surrealism that comes from much of the developer’s works.
Retired Men’s Nude Beach Volleyball League is a moving experience that asks us to examine where our own lives are headed, and what we’ll do as we head toward the end of our lives. The game does come with a silly sense of humor about its events (I mean, read its name again), but its hopeful, heartfelt messages about aging, loneliness, and dying are the core of this lovely work.
Retired Men’s Nude Beach Volleyball League is available now on Humble Choice and Steam.
