Wolfstride sees you leading a team of former criminal buddies as they strive to win a prestigious mecha competition through use of their unique talents.
Duque, Knife, and Dominic inherit a junkyard mecha. What’s the first thing you think of doing when you get a clunker that’s basically garbage? Enter it in the biggest tournament in the world, if you’re this gang of shady pals. Still, they all have a useful knack for something that will give you a fighting chance. Duque excels at repairs and working with machines, so they’re more than capable of picking out the right parts and keeping your mecha together. Knife is a solid pilot, too, so you actually might stand a decent chance of winning. That is, if smooth-talking Dominic can get enough jobs and find the cash to keep things moving.
You will bounce between the three characters, guiding Dominic through town as he talks with folks and picks up odd jobs to make money. This money can be funnelled to Duque, who will fix the mecha up and acquire better parts, which will give you stronger hits and better combat options during matches. After that, it’s up to Knife to work through the turn-based fights. These can get pretty involved, as you have to plan out positioning to get some advantages against the other fighters. You’re not just trading blows, here. You’ll also have to be pretty careful at times, as your junker mecha can only take so much pounding before it’s scrapped. If you help Knife fight carefully, though, and make some good calls with parts, you have a good chance of winning.
Wolfstride offers some interesting perspectives with its three characters, bringing some great stories and absurd moments when it’s not in a fight. When it’s time to throw down, though, the turn-based fights look sharp, offering some great art (I love me some mech games with great art) that adds a sense of excitement to the battles. That interplay between the criminal characters, their funny, yet compelling stories, and that fantastic mecha combat makes for a super solid experience.
Wolfstride is available now on Steam.
