If I hear a voice outside at night, I ignore it. When the heroine of Lily’s Well hears one, though, she starts figuring out how to get to it. Brave kid.
Probably not going to be a kid with a long life, though. You can do your best to help her out with this by working through the various adventure puzzles of this title, though. Mostly, though, you’ll be looking for things you can use as a rope to get down to the bottom of a well. The voice is coming from there, you see. And for some reason, Lily STILL wants to go see the source of the voice. While this is already dangerous and foolish, doing it without a rope is an even worse idea. And there’s not much actual rope around. So, you need to cobble together a rope to get down there.
Now, seeing as Lily chases ghostly noises down wells, you can fairly assume she routinely makes poor decisions. So, you need to help her with this when you find something you COULD tie to your rope. Lots of things can be used as rope in the game, and you’ll need to connect a bunch of them to reach the bottom safely. However, many of these items won’t hold your weight, so you need to help Lily pick the right ones. She’ll tie any old thing to that rope if you tell her to, which is a quick way to die in a long fall. So, be careful what you choose to tie to your rope if you’re hoping to help her at least survive to the bottom.
Beyond finding pieces of rope, there’s some eerie puzzles and events thrumming through Lily’s Well. A powerful dread weaves through it all, especially as you guess at whether an item will break and drop you to your death if you use it to climb down. And even if you ARE picking the right things, it feels like you’re just stepping toward a grisly, inevitable death. That sense of a march toward destruction makes this game incredibly compelling, creating a fantastic horror adventure. If you’re a fan of kids facing unsettling dangers, I guess.
