Mirlo Above the Sun is a hack and slash game in a beautiful world where you must save your home from robots that want to use your energy to fuel their machines.
Your beautiful world has been overrun and attacked by robots from the Solarean civilization, slaughtering and trapping anyone they find. Solareans have taken the different creatures in the world and started using them to harness energy so that they could power/make more machines. You play as Mirlo, looking to free your home and help the world become better.
At the start of the game, you only have the ability to jump and slash to defeat enemies, but over time, you can find new abilities which allow you to dash and better get around the world.
Off in the distance, you can see the city you once lived in, but you’ll need to work your way there by following paths and running along the city walls. The robots that are littered around this land will often trap you in places, taking you on and trying to overwhelm you. You can hit them – many take a few hits to destroy – and knock them into the traps around you. knocking them off the edges of these buildings or into spike pits will instantly kill them. Any turrets that are attacking you can also be hit to free the creatures that have been trapped inside.
Mirlo Above the Sun is pretty fast-paced, as you run, jump, and dash through the game. It’s a very forgiving game, allowing you to retry areas if you die by just going back ever so slightly. The world is striking to explore as well, and continues to grow in beauty the further you get into the game. My only real issue with the game comes with some polishing issues. Often the camera automatically turns as you play the game, and for the first chunk of my play time I had a hard time to tell where my character was and if they’d jump into the pit or onto the platform. This can be frustrating, especially if your mind doesn’t click with where you are. I also feel the game would benefit from a variety of music – more tense tunes when trapped would add a lot.
This game itself does try out a few different gameplay features, from running along a giant train to moving boxes on buttons to fighting robots around conveyor belts. As a free title, Mirlo Above the Sun has a lot to offer!
Mirlo Above the Sun is available now on Steam.
