In Restless Soul, you play a ghost who has just died, but your afterlife takes place in funny, interesting, and wacky world that has you exploring, fighting, and more.
Restless Soul is a twin-stick bullet hell shooter where there are large breaks between battles, allowing you to explore strange worlds, discover secrets, and do whatever you want, to be honest. You have a ghost dog you can pet, a bunch of other ghosts to befriend and interact with, and enemies that are trying to attack you for some reason. And you can also take selfies.
The humor in Restless Soul is what stuck out most for me when playing at The Mix at GDC, where the narration often picked fun at the developer and the game itself, pointing out that the game needed to have objectives, as otherwise it would just be too short. You are looking to get back to the life of the living, but so is a gang of other souls who also want to stop you in your tracks. Doesn’t mean the game will stop teasing everyone during your serious quest to return to life.
The fights are also difficult, with tons of bullets to dodge as you’d expect in a bullet hell, but new to me are the 2D and 3D points of view of many of the battles, which bring a new level of challenge into the game. There are lots of times where you do need to avoid bullets, sometimes in places and other times from enemies, but that’s just a part of the game – and you can always shoot back too!
If you like games that are self aware and full of secrets for you to come and discover, then Restless Souls is one that will fit in well with what you are looking for! And there is even a ghost dog you can pet.
Restless Soul is currently in development, but in the meantime, you can add it to your Steam Wishlist.
