DRAINUS gives you a Reflector shield that lets you temporarily devour damaging shots and fire them right back at your enemies. If you use it with care.
You’re a slave to the Kharlal Empire. Your father is, too, and he’s very sick. The only cure is on distant Earth, so your prospects seems grim. That’s when a time traveler pops into your presence, looking to take you to Earth and stop the Empire in their current state. When your low on prospects and a time-traveling frog offers the help of his energy-absorbing space ship, you can’t afford to be picky. So, hop aboard and start tearing up some Kharlal spacecraft.
The Empire isn’t especially keen on letting you go, so they’ve put a few hundred ships between you and home. You have an array of different weapons you can use on them, giving you many different shot types to choose from. The handy part is that you don’t have to HOPE you get the right weapon as you would in many other shmups. Here, you can change your loadout on the fly by pausing the game. You’re not stuck with some awful weapon because you didn’t know what was coming. So, keep shifting your tactics as you need to.
Why use your own weapons when you can turn enemy shots back on them, though? Your starship can turn on a temporary shield that will absorb energy weapons (bullets can still rip you apart, though). This charged energy can get launched back at foes for a little payback, letting you safely avoid getting hurt while doling out pain yourself. It’s an ability you’ll want to use often throughout DRAINUS, as it can get pretty challenging throughout it. With the ability to switch weapons at any time and use enemy shots against them, though, you should have all the powers you need to survive this sharp-looking shmup.
DRAINUS is available now on Steam.
