WITH: Whale in the High lets you watch the daily happenings of a city on a flying whale’s back, seeing what sorts of silly, charming activities the inhabitants are getting up to.
There is a fine line in my mind between a game and a toy. Not all toys are games, but some games are toys, and that is fine. This is one of those games that tip-toes the line of being a digital toy, but there is an entire world in there for you to watch and interact with. It’s an adorable game where you find yourself in a small town. The creatures in this world are like long jelly beans that come in shades of pink and purple. They live their lives here, creating a whole world by whale’s blowhole.
As a player, there are lots of ways to interact with the world, but also lots of moments of watching and supporting the creatures living there. Everything tells a story; from the overrun daycare of little creatures tumbling around to the lady who steals fish from the fisher so that they are not eaten. You do not get to stop some of these actions, but you can watch them, laugh, and see what else the creatures do.
When it comes to actually interacting with the world in WITH: Whale in the High, you can upgrade different areas around the map, which is a primary way of playing. These upgrades change the world and add more features that the creatures can play with. You can also customize some of the creatures; giving them new outfits to walk around with. Some other smaller areas of the world also have interaction points for you to examine and play around with.
WITH: Whale in the High is a game that is meant to bring people joy. You’re meant to dip in and see your world if you are feeling alone or are sad. It’s a place full of joy and silly creatures, and it creates a really happy experience.
