Soulbaby: Remastered sees the battle arena get ever tinier as you gain new abilities to face swirly-faced foes, making it harder and harder to survive.
You’re a brand new hero and all sorts of things are out to get you. Still, what tools work best for you? Do you prefer your shots coming out in waves? Want them to travel through enemies to hit more targets? Got a preferred direction these shots simultaneously travel in? You can choose from a selection of possible powers. These can also be upgraded in various ways to make them fire out faster, do a bit of healing, and things like that. Maybe you want a few more seconds of slowdown when you’re picking which special move to use? It’s all up to you, and relayed in a snazzy looking series of menus.
Customizing your character isn’t exactly unusual, though. Your powers need to charge as you work through the game, and each of these charge meters takes up a segment of the screen. Having one or two only takes up a bit of space, but if you’ve got a full loadout, you play area is going to get pretty tiny. This gives you less time to deal with enemies that are rushing your way, forcing you to work on your reaction times. This creates a neat back and forth, as while you’ve gained some more offensive strength, you have to be more careful about your movements and when you fire off a special move. You might leave yourself largely defenseless when something is just about to blunder into you.
Soulbaby: Remastered plays up this battle between screen size and character strength, steadily keeping things challenging and dialing up the pressure as your time to react plummets with each chunk of screen you lose.
Soulbaby: Remastered is available now (in an Early Access state) on itch.io and Steam.
