EL PASO, NIGHTMARE makes for a hellish evening at the hotel. You just wanted to get some ice, but instead, you got zombies and undead spellcasters.
It was an exhausting Tuesday, but it’s time to relax at the hotel. Just need to grab a little ice down the hall and you should be good to relax. Except you probably should have stayed in your room, as you’ll find that this hotel’s layout is a bit confusing. It’s also filled with zombie-like creatures that are wandering the halls. I’m also pretty sure there’s no ice machine. So, you’re stuck wandering the place looking for a way out. If you draw attention to yourself, though, you’ll find yourself in a breakneck chase throughout the corridors. Finding your way through a maze while being chased is a terrifying time.
If you find the exit, though, you’ll find the party has just started. The zombies and creatures who were chasing you indoors have now filled the bizarre, grave-filled world outside. You’ve got a gun now so you can fight back, but you’ll find there are far, far more unpleasant creatures outside. They just keep coming, too, forcing you to constantly run and weave through the confounding layouts. It’s exhilarating to fight back against the varied hordes of foes that keep following you, but it’s also terrifying. You can see your ammo dwindling as your foes keep getting stronger. It’s equally hopeless and exciting, capturing an incredible mixture of feelings as you keep trying to get your character to safety. Assuming safety exists anywhere in this world.
EL PASO, NIGHTMARE offers a terrifying chase sequence that keeps you moving (which I love so much more than horror titles that have me hiding from enemies) as well as some slick, fast gunplay against persistent, endless forces. It’s quick and challenging, offers a good array of unique enemies, and hints at a monstrous world that I’m excited to learn more about.
EL PASO, NIGHTMARE is available now on Steam.
