1 Bit Survivor is all about the importance of animal friendship. Zombies might want you dead, but you’re going to keep your cat alive (and look going doing it).
Life has been hard ever since the undead showed up. The possibility of being eaten does tend to make for long, stressful days. Well, once you made a feline friend named Leo, things got a bit easier. It feels more worthwhile to try to survive. Unfortunately, actually staying alive when there’s very little ammo and a whole lot of things that want to kill you is quite challenging. If you can survive for twenty-eight days, though, you have a good chance of finding an end to all of this. One where you and your kitty get a bit of peace, hopefully.
I still don’t have much interest in zombie games after getting burnt out on them years ago, but there’s something so compelling about the look of this one. There’s this minimalist, almost-cute style to the general artwork when you explore. Those little pixel zombies may look cranky, but how much harm could those cute little fellas cause? When you fight back, though, you’re treated to an explosive, highly-detailed look at your weapon firing or your knife cleaving at the air. Something about these animations and effects give the action this incredible feeling of impact that loans the action so much more ferocity than the adorable characters should be capable of. I swear, I never get tired of seeing these animations any time I do anything in this game.
1 Bit Survivor is definitely challenging with its lack of resources and its relentless (and again, kinda cute) undead hordes, but if you’re careful about how you use your turn, you have a decent chance of surviving. However, its the look and feel of your gunshots and knife strikes that keep me coming back for more. Well, that and I’d hate for my cat friend to have to live in this world without me.
1 Bit Survivor is available now on itch.io and Google Play.
