Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is about a robot that’s rejected its mission to keep humanity in check, instead fighting to help with a customizable battle style.
There is a definite feel to this game that keeps me coming back to it. Playing a robot ninja was bound to be cool, but the game does so much more with that idea. You’re a robot ninja that’s revolting against the masters who want you to punish the people for seeking justice against a corrupt system. You refuse to be used to keep humanity down. The way you can cut through enemy shots with your sword. The way the screen shakes with every single attack you make. There’s this sense of justice and power behind every swing. A feeling of righteous revenge that the game captures incredibly alongside being a fantastic action game.
And it is definitely an incredible action game. You have so many dark, sinister foes and massive, disturbing machine bosses to face down. You get an array of equipable upgrades that you can find in the levels to bolster your powers. These give you all kinds of new perks and powers (like regenerating your MP so you can use your more powerful strikes far more often) that let you tweak things to your play style. The stages mingle horror and machinery as you slowly overwhelm the enemies of the people. Even moving around feels incredible with the afterimage of your character following you, as well as the ability to jump off walls, jump kick after bouncing off foes, and climb on all kinds of stuff.
Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider just makes everything feel GOOD, from the combat to the movement to the emotions you feel when striking down the world’s cruel overlords. Joymasher excels at making good action games, and this is yet another incredible work from them.
Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is available now on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and Steam.
