Your Only Move Is HUSTLE (YOMI HUSTLE) slows down the strategic interplay of fighting games, letting you set up frame-perfect matches and impressive battles.
So much happens every millisecond in a fighting game. Matches are won and lost based on a single call from fifteen seconds ago. Players who know the interplay of the hit boxes between certain moves may have an advantage, but an opponent acting in an unpredictable way could get the drop on them anyway. There’s so much stuff happening so fast that I totally understand how intimidating the genre can be. It intimidated ME for years. This game aims to slow all of that technical knowledge and move interplay down, giving you plenty of time to figure out what you should do to stop your foe’s assault.
The game feels like mixing fighting games with those cool animations people used to do with martial arts stick figures. You have all of the frame data, hit boxes, and special move info you need in order to do cool combos, but you don’t have to worry about inputs or split-second timing. You just need to take a look at your situation, analyze what the opponent is up to (down to the frame of movement), and then pick the best counter from your toolset. Or, if you’re on the offensive, you can choose moves that link into one another, that can be cancelled into stronger hits, or that will juggle your foe in the air. You do all of this at your own pace, allowing you to weave the most lethal combos your mind can come up with.
YOMI HUSTLE is an excellent experience in what you could possibly do if your mind and hands were running in the most optimal way during a fighting game match. It’s also an incredible tool for teaching yourself to examine your fighting game matches in other games, asking yourself how all of your tools can work together in a given situation to come out on top.
Your Only Move Is HUSTLE is available now on Steam.
If you like the idea of a turn-based fighting game, you may also like Mega Knockdown, which is more like a traditional fighter in a turn based system. Big fan of YOMIH too tho.
I think I’ve seen that one! I keep meaning to grab it to try as it looks really neat.
Of note- Ivy has a free Itch release that is still up, and was the primary source before to the Steam release. Fun to play around with in singleplayer!
